When he stepped out of the portal, it was raining. Things had only gone downhill from there. Of course, Alex didn't know what he'd expected. A happy trip home? A belated birthday party with hats and streamers? Something resembling sanity?

Alex wondered if his mother had ever looked vibrant. She had to have been happy once. Now, though, as she watched him pack his things silently, Alex thought she'd never looked more gone. Gone as someone could be while they were alive.
